It was recently revealed that the long-awaited revival of Fable is going through something of an identity crisis. Apparently the developersnot quite sure”, as it should be, although the term “Witcher-like” is used.
On the Fable subreddit, many fans fear that the series could lose its identity with a Witcher-inspired sequel or reboot. Some are particularly concerned that this could mean Fable will lose some of its iconic British charm, appealing to a wider audience instead.
“I love The Witcher, but my internal reaction to it was not very good,” says Reddit user Crispy_87. “I hope they don’t make the game as dark or realistic as The Witcher.
Others agree, although not as kind to The Witcher as some fans.
“The Witcher is a playable movie, I want a game,” cannibalzombies says. “There’s a simplicity to Fable that would be shattered if it were a Witcher clone.”
Some are understandably wary that Fable’s cartoonish humor won’t translate well into a fantasy world that puts more emphasis on realism, meaning it could possibly be left behind. True, it’s hard to imagine perfectly detailed and animated villagers putting up with a hero who runs and kicks chickens all day long.
However, some fans wouldn’t mind seeing Fable take a few pages from The Witcher in certain areas. From combat to world design, polishing some parts of Fable can make Albion shine.
But in general, one thing is clear: Fable fans want the game to be like Fable. With a brand new development team that also seems to be struggling to find a Fable identity, it remains to be seen if what we’re getting is much like the original games.
