Fabiola Campillai, who lost the vision in both eyes after being hit with a blunt object, presumably a tear gas canister, accused no support from the Government, from where “they have never called me.”
Campillai was hit on November 27 – second month of the social outbreak – in the vicinity of his home, in the San Bernardo commune, when he was going to work the night shift at the Carozzi company, where he had been working for some years.
Almost nine months after the episode that changed his life forever, he spoke again about his situation, this time with the electronic medium Dinosaur Republic, which transmits programs through social networks.
There, she was consulted about the attitude that the Government has had towards her, and she assured that “They have never called us, they have never come, they have never tried to know how we are or how I am, nothing. Not even in the hospital. They have not given any importance to my case, there has been no interest”.
For his part, he said that he has contacted Gustavo Gatica, first protester to go completely blind after receiving BB shots in his eyes during the protests, and that he has received help from his family.
“Just ask that this investigation end, that there be a little speed, because the investigation is not over yet and there cannot be a trial. And about the person who shot me, the truth is that we have not known much, only that he continues in his work as if nothing, while I, day by day, try to get ahead and re-learn everything I already knew. It is like starting over, being born, and learning everything again and it is a huge rage that he continues in his work, as if he had never done anything. I don’t know whether to take it as a joke, “he also said.
However, Campillai acknowledged that although the perpetrator of the shot is tried, “There will be no justice for me, (because) I will not be able to recover my eyes and my justice would be to recover my eyes, but I know that it is not possible “.
Therefore, “I ask for justice so that at least the person who took my eyes off me pays for what he did and pays with jail, not that they are dismissed and continue as if nothing,” he added.
He said that he has not been able to continue with his rehabilitation sessions due to health measures due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that he has tried to maintain a “normal” life at home, waiting for a surgical intervention.
Last July, details of a video were known, filmed with the GoPro cameras of the police, which complicates the Carabineros in the framework of this case: the expression is heard in the record “He whistled it, didn’t he? ‘Matu seems to have hit him, hit him with a …'”, in reference to Captain Patricio Maturana Ojeda, according to the Carabineros administrative summary -which is included in the investigation of the Public Ministry-.
After knowing that video, the Government has stated that its interest “is that responsibilities are established”.
Meanwhile, at least until June, Carabineros affirmed that the administrative investigation was still ongoing.
That same time it was confirmed that an official was discharged for breaching the protocol in the framework of the injuries suffered by Gustavo Gatica, for downloading images before they were delivered to the PDI.
The institution initiated 1,228 investigations, a thousand of which have already been completed, linked to all the alleged irregularities that occurred during the social outbreak: as a result of these summaries, 173 officials were sanctioned and another 14 were discharged.
