“Soccer is a simple sport in which some like to talk. I love to win ”. The phrase, although it denies the abuse of verbiage, speaks for itself, worth the redundancy. Or at least, it defines wonderfully the attitude of its author, a Fabio Capello that this Thursday, surely maintaining that winning spirit, turns 75 years old.
Three-quarters of a century have passed since June 18, 1946 Evelina Tortul Capello gave birth to Fabio, fruit of love with her husband Gerrino Capello. It was in San Canzian d’Isonzo, a small town in the province of Gorizia, bordering to the east with Slovenia (then Yugoslavia). Little Fabio, without knowing it, had come into the world to live forever closely linked to ‘calcium’.
In fact, his uncle on his mother’s side, Mario Tortul, 15 years older than him, played in the Sampdoria, and both his father and his paternal uncle were strong men in the Pieris, which would be his first team. Later Fabio He wore the t-shirts of the SLEEP, the Roma, the Juventus and the Milan in the 60s and 70s, and after hanging up his boots, far from moving away from leather, he got closer to it if possible.
His career as a coach started in the lower categories of ‘su’ Milan, learned from Arrigo Sacchi, of whom he was second, and later he would become the head of the ‘rossonero’ bench, reaching four ‘Scudetti‘, three Coppas, a European Super Cup and above all that the Champions League of the 1993/94 academic year, defeating in Athens the ‘Dream Team’ of the Barça from Cruyff for nothing more and nothing less than 4-0. Everything quoted with the Milan, before going through the benches of the Real Madrid (where he won two Leagues), Roma (a ‘Scudetto‘ and one Cup), the Juventus, the selections of England Y Russia and the Jiangsu Chinese, his last team to date.
All this and much more has been Don Fabio Capello, who turns 75 this Friday enjoying what seems like his retirement from football. Only he knows if one day he will sit on a bench again or not, but of course the path he has taken to date has left its mark on this ‘calcium’ thing.
