Fabian Lurquin and Sebastien Loeb battle adversity in Dakar Rally, still fighting for podium finish

This day was announced as complicated… and it was the case“, sighed Fabian Lurquin after the day.

We started with a puncture because we were in attack mode. Then at kilometer 132, we arrive in a place marked “danger” and we hit a rock which breaks our upper triangle, the lower triangle and causes us to puncture again. We had what we needed to repair the upper triangle but not the lower triangle. We said to ourselves “it’s dead”. We were ready to take the helicopter and return when a Chinese man arrived with the same car as us (Sic) and told us he had the part we needed. He even helped us put it back in.”

But the problems didn’t end there for Loeb and Lurquin. “We then drove to kilometer 191 where we collected two spare wheels and set off again into the rocky hell. We had flat tires 5 times in total, we were riding on the rim…”

Third overall at the end of the day, the Franco-Belgian crew is still fighting for the podium. The last day of the rally will therefore be decisive. “The good news is that we are still on the podium. Tomorrow is 175 km. We are starting behind with lots of people and not particularly easy places to overtake. We will have to fight to have a chance to be on the podium. It’s a Dakar that will be played out until the end and we hope to bring home a consolation prize.”
