Stone (ots) – Thanks to 10,000 hectares of its own forests, the company has been producing in a climate-neutral manner for years. According to the current TÜV certificate, Faber-Castell was able to reduce its emissions by a further 26 percent. The pen manufacturer relies mainly on renewable energies worldwide.
In the 2019/20 financial year, the CO2 emissions of the Faber-Castell production sites were reduced by 12,000 tons compared to the previous year (-26%). This roughly corresponds to the CO2 emissions of an average car after driving more than 70 million kilometers. In relation to the number of products manufactured worldwide, emissions were reduced by 20%. For every 1 million units produced, emissions fell from over 13 to just under 11 tonnes – a successful development that is primarily due to the further increase in the proportion of electricity from renewable energies.
In addition to Brazil and Austria, which have been covering their electricity needs with 100% green electricity for a long time, Peru and Germany are now using only green electricity. The lower number of air freight also contributed to the reduction. As in previous years, all calculations were audited by TÜV and offset by the company’s own forests in Brazil.
In the meantime, the Faber-Castell factories across the group use almost 85% thermal and electrical energy from renewable sources. The head office in Stein in Middle Franconia has even been producing green electricity for decades thanks to a water turbine. Latin America in particular plays a leading role in the area of energy demand. Brazil, the world’s largest pencil producer and exporter of writing and drawing implements to over 70 countries, started buying energy from renewable sources in 2006. The plant has been using only green electricity since 2019 and has improved significantly thanks to ambitious environmental goals in the area of wastewater and waste disposal.
The worldwide Faber-Castell production companies in nine countries produce climate-neutrally thanks to the 10,000 hectares of the company’s own pine forests in Brazil. This is unique in the industry. The 100% FSC-certified forests provide the raw material for the Brazilian pencil factory and can cover up to 80% of the worldwide wood requirements of the Faber-Castell Group. The wood also used is also FSC or PEFC certified, so that the 2.3 billion lead and colored pencils produced in the group come 100% from certified sustainable forestry.
Faber-Castell publishes its group-wide environmental indicators on a regular basis, thus ensuring transparency in sustainability reporting. With the use of almost 85% renewable energy sources and the demonstrably climate-neutral production through its own forests, Faber-Castell remains one of the industry pioneers when it comes to climate protection.
Faber-Castell is one of the world’s leading companies for high-quality products for writing, drawing and creative design as well as decorative cosmetic products. With over two billion pencils and colored pencils per year and around 6,500 employees, Faber-Castell is the most important manufacturer of wood-cased pencils worldwide. Today the company is represented in over 120 countries and has its own production facilities in ten and sales companies in 22 countries around the world. The Faber-Castell industrial company, founded in 1761, is one of the oldest in the world and has been owned by the same family for nine generations.
