FAA reveals list of 50 airports that will have 5G mitigation zones

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has published the list of 50 airports that will have mitigation zones or areas where the wireless operators AT&T and Verizon will activate the new 5G C band service on the 19th.

The agency sought information from the aviation community where the proposed mitigation zones would help reduce the risk of disruption. The volume of traffic, the number of days of low visibility and the geographical location were taken into account in the selection.

Many airports will not currently be affected by the new 5G rollout, although they are not on this list. These include airports that are not in the 46 markets where the new service will be implemented and airports that are currently they do not have the ability to allow low visibility landings.

The wireless companies agreed to turn off the transmitters and make other adjustments near these airports for six months to minimize potential 5G interference with sensitive aircraft instruments used for low visibility landings.

The FAA continues to work with aerospace manufacturers and wireless companies to ensure 5G is safely deployed and to limit the risk of flight disruptions at all airports.

“Safety is at the core of our mission and this guides all of our decisions. The FAA Thanks AT&T and Verizon for Accepting a Voluntary Delay and Proposed Mitigations. We look forward to using the additional time and space to reduce flight disruptions associated with this 5G deployment, ”the agency said.

Airports included in the list include: Dallas Love Field, a major passenger hub for Southwest Airlines; Chicago O’Hare, a large hub for United Airlines and American Airlines, as well as those of Indianapolis, northern New Jersey, and New York City, serving as private aviation and cargo hubs.
