Chelsea request a quarterfinal match FA Cup oppose Middlesbrough this weekend was held without spectators. The Blues reasoned that the basics of justice apply to both teams.
It was reported by Sky Sports, the request was made by Chelsea because they could not sell tickets to supporters, both home and away matches. This is the impact of the sanctions imposed on the owner of the club, Roman Abramovich.
Only ticket holders who have purchased prior to the sanction are allowed to attend the stadium. Especially for the match against Middlesbrough at Riverside Stadium, only 650 tickets were sold out of the 4,620 allocated.
Now the remaining tickets that have not been sold can no longer be sold to the public. Chelsea have asked the government for permission to be allowed to release the remaining tickets for free for supporters, but there has been no answer to this question.
Current conditions make Chelsea felt they had no ‘sporting advantage’, and therefore asked the English Football Federation (FA) to have the match played behind closed doors for ‘principles of justice in the current situation’.
The request was not without criticism. Middlesbrough clearly refused, especially since the 30,000 tickets they had prepared for this match had already been sold out.
“All parties are aware of the reasons that led to Chelsea’s suspension, and it has nothing to do with Middlesbrough. Requesting that we and our supporters are also punished is clearly unfair and without basis at all,” read a statement Middlesbrough.
Chelsea Supporters Trust also criticized the ‘weird request’, because playing without spectators will not benefit any supporters. Even so, they hope that Chelsea are given leeway by the British Government in order to sell match tickets.
Now it’s just a matter of waiting for the FA to request Chelsea approved or not.
