F1 The day Liberty Media refused a GP in New York

Greg Maffei, chief executive of Liberty Media, said New York Mayor Eric Adams had proposed Randalls and Wards Island as a venue for a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The Big Apple was considered a potential host city as early as 2011 by Bernie Ecclestone. Although a circuit along the banks of the Hudson River across from Manhattan was put on track at the time, the project ultimately fell through due to its lack of financial backing.

Speaking at a media event in New York on Thursday, Maffei revealed that new Mayor Eric Adams, who has been in office since January 1 this year, contacted Liberty Media and suggested the joint Randalls and Wards Islands which are separated from Manhattan by the Harlem River as a potential site for a Grand Prix in New York.

“The Eric Adams administration has reached out to us for the holding of a Grand Prix in New Yorksaid Maffei. I think it was too difficult to organize. Their proposal, Randalls Island, is not our dream location« .

“You know a lot of time and money was spent here 15 to 20 years ago, including by Leo Hindery, one of my predecessors, trying to organize a Grand Prix in Hoboken”

“The reality is that street racing in a place like New York is just very, very difficult to organize. Las Vegas is one of the few places in the United States where you could probably do a street race, the mentality is different” continues Maffei.

New York is a wonderful place, but it’s hard to imagine they’re going to close Central Park for us! Organizing a race there is a fight we don’t need to have” he concludes.
