F1: The confusion is starting, Barcelona would also remain in the calendar

Liberty Media, the rights owner of Formula 1, announced on Tuesday that the Spanish Grand Prix will be held in Madrid for ten years from 2026, where they will create a half-street, half-built track.

A new race control tower, offices, and entertainment spaces will be created for the races, and the grandstand will initially be able to serve 110,000 and later 140,000 spectators at the same time. The Spanish capital last hosted F1 in 1981.

On Tuesday, Sports Minister Pilar Alegría discussed with Stefano Domenicali, the president and CEO of Formula 1, whether the government would keep the Barcelona location, which has hosted the Grand Prix since 1991, in addition to the Madrid one.

The sports minister argued, among other things, that the country is currently sending two drivers to the F1 field in Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz. In Spain, by the way, Valencia was also an F1 director between 2008 and 2012.

“Madrid’s accession does not rule out that Barcelona will remain the host even after the contract expires in 2026, negotiations are already underway in this matter,” Domenicali stated in his answer. “The competition between the cities also indicates how salable and valuable the Formula 1 offer is,” he added.
