Oscar Piastri won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in a race that had everything. The Australian started behind Charles Leclerc and overtook him on lap 20; from there he held off him perfectly and maintained first place until the end. Towards the end, Sergio Checo Pérez and Carlos Sainz had a shocking crash when they were fighting for third place. Franco Colapinto took advantage of this, finishing eighth and adding four points to the general table. Relive the best of the day.
The complex Baku street circuit hosted the best race of the season so far. Throughout the day there was an intense fight for first place. The Monegasque driver started first, but was overtaken by Piastri midway through the race. From then on, the McLaren driver defended his position very well and gave the Ferrari man no chance. Checo and Sainz stalked towards the end, having a shocking accident when fighting for third place. George Russell took advantage of this and climbed onto the podium.
It was the second win of the Australian’s career, having already won in Hungary. His teammate Lando Norris also had a great day after his poor qualifying. He started fifteenth and finished fourth, beating Max Verstappen on the track. With these results, McLaren took first place in the constructors’ table.
Another driver who had a great day was Argentine Franco Colapinto, who scored four points in his second race in Formula 1. He made no mistakes on a very demanding circuit, holding off Lewis Hamilton towards the end and overtaking Nico Hulkenberg on the penultimate lap. He also took advantage of the incident to move up to eighth place, the same position he started in.
