The Formula One Canadian Grand Prix will be held in May instead of June from 2026 to help reduce the carbon footprint and consolidate the European season into a consecutive period.
F1 said in a statement that rescheduling to the third or fourth weekend in May will remove an additional transatlantic crossing from the 24-race calendar.
This year’s test at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was held on June 9, after Monaco and before Spain, and is scheduled for June 15 next year, after Spain and before Austria.
The Miami GP was held on May 5 and is likely to be paired with Canada in the future.
The organizers of the Monaco Grand Prix have already agreed to move their flagship race from the end of May to the first full weekend in June starting in 2026, avoiding a regular coincidence with the Indianapolis 500.
Other races have also been realigned so that the calendar flows from one region to another, reducing distances traveled by teams and air travel, which is a major source of carbon emissions.
Stefano Domenicali, F1 CEO, thanked Canadian government stakeholders for their cooperation.
“The change will make the future flow of our schedule not only more sustainable, but logistically more sensible for our teams and staff,” he said.
“Our Net Zero by 2030 commitment remains a priority for us as a sport and it is thanks to changes like this that we are on track to achieve our goal.”
