Mercedes has been painting its F1 machines for years in silver colors, hence the term “silver arrows” stuck to the crew. However, in 2020 Mercedes machines will be black. In this way, the company supports diversity in motorsport.

In Formula 1 there is a discussion related to support for excluded people – even black people or representatives of the LGBT community. F1 announced the start of the #WeRaceAsOne campaign, which is to support the victims and lead to equal opportunities for various minorities.
Lewis Hamilton was also very involved in the fight against racism, as the only black driver in F1 he was repeatedly victim of persecution because of his skin color. The current Formula 1 world champion incl. appeared on protest in the streets of London, supported the Black Lives Matter campaign several times, and founded a special association to support excluded people.
Now Mercedes went a step further. The German team decided to change the colors of their machine less than a week before the resumption of the F1 season. The W11 will be painted black. “In this way, we want to support diversity – not only in our team, but also in the whole discipline. We are sending a signal to sport to engage in the fight against racism and discrimination,” announced Mercedes.

The Mercedes decision appealed to Hamilton. – It is very important to properly use this moment to educate everyone around. Regardless of whether it’s about people, companies, known or unknown brands. Everyone has a chance to introduce changes aimed at ensuring equality – said the 35-year-old.
– I have personally experienced racism in my life. I saw my family and friends being harassed because of their skin color. Therefore, when I call for changes in this aspect, my words flow from the bottom of my heart – added Hamilton.
As the current world champion F1 revealed, he has been talking to Toto Wolff for several weeks about how Mercedes can join the fight against racism. – I would like to thank him for hearing me. Also to the Mercedes management for paying me attention. It is important for me that as a company we are sending a clear signal that we are ready for change, that we want to improve. We want to build a heritage that goes beyond sport – summarized Hamilton.
