F1 Drivers Criticize Hungarian GP’s New Tire Rationing Trial

F1 drivers slam Hungarian GP’s new tire rationing trial

Formula 1 drivers have strongly criticized the Hungarian GP’s first trial this weekend of a new tire rationing system designed to improve F1’s infamous sustainability by reducing the number of tires used per driver per race from 13 to 11, thereby reducing the amount of necessary freight.

In addition, the tire formula is also strictly limited in qualifying. Q1 can only use hard tires, Q2 can only be equipped with medium tires, and soft tires can only be used in Q3.

This test was originally to be carried out for the first time in the Emilia Romagna GP, but this race was canceled due to weather conditions, and it was changed to the Hungarian GP this weekend, and it will be implemented again in the Italian GP held at the Monza circuit.

However, according to the initial feedback given by the drivers, it was strongly criticized. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton believed that this system would have an impact on the visibility of the game, because the team is likely to reduce the time of free practice.

After Friday’s trip, Verstappen was asked by reporters to comment on Red Bull Racing’s upgrade this weekend. He criticized the system. He felt that it was unfair to the live audience. The current world champion said: “Honestly, it’s hard to say. We will study the data we have collected to see if everything is in line with our assumptions, because we did not use many sets of tires today.”

“Because of this new system, you are very limited in terms of tire use, and I don’t want to use up too many tires today, at least to be better prepared for tomorrow. But it’s a bit of a shame, there are so many spectators and you basically have nothing to run.”

“We’ll have to see what we can do to improve that, we’re definitely saving tire usage, I don’t think that’s the right thing to do.”

Hamilton of Mercedes-AMG agrees with his opponents and believes that reducing the amount of tires should start with rain tires. He said: “I can only use one set of tires during the stage, so the change of their system this weekend is not very good. It means that we can run better lap times, so it is not an ideal situation.”

“And we had a lot of wet tires, I think they threw away a lot after the race, really a lot. Maybe they should think about a solution in this regard, instead of depriving the audience of the time to see the drivers running on the field.”

Kevin Magnussen of the Haas team also proposed an alternative solution. He suggested that if F1 wants to reduce the number of tires, it should review the entire race weekend.

“If that’s what they’re going to do (i.e. reduce the number of tires from 13 to 11), they might as well reduce the number of free practice sessions, maybe one or two a race weekend.”
