F1 champion Max Verstappen “The relationship with the race engineer is like marriage”[F1-Gate.com]

Two-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen spoke about the dynamic between himself and F1 race engineer Giampiero Lambiase.

Giampiero Lambiase has worked as Max Verstappen’s race engineer since his promotion from Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing at the 2016 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, and is responsible for the radio behind all of Verstappen’s 35 wins.

In an interview with RacingNews365.com, when asked if he had a brotherly relationship with his race engineer, as he does with other drivers, Verstappen joked: “Maybe it’s like marriage.”

“Just decide which is the husband and which is the wife!”

Before Red Bull Racing, Giampiero Lambiase worked for Jordan, evolving to Midland, Spyker and finally Force India, where he remained until 2014, working with Verstappen’s current teammate, Sergio Perez.

Giampiero Lambiase was then lured by Red Bull, but was actually supposed to work with former F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel, Verstappen has revealed.

“He was promised to work with Seb (Vettel) so he signed. But two weeks later Seb moved to Ferrari. Then in 2015 he had to work with Daniil (Kvyat). It didn’t become”

“We still laugh about it sometimes. He was promised to work with Seb, and now, after all these years, he’s working with me!”

With this successful pairing of driver and engineer, Verstappen added that he hopes to maintain the same working relationship for the next few years.

“It was really good,” said Max Verstappen.

“Also, once things go well, it’s very important to stay together. If you always have to work with another race engineer, I don’t think that’s a good thing.

“I don’t want to change. I hope he doesn’t want to change either.”

Continuing the same theme of F1 longevity, Max Verstappen, who is contracted to Red Bull Racing until 2028, was asked if he intended to stay with Red Bull for the rest of his F1 career.

Max Verstappen said it “could happen” before clarifying he did not want to extend his F1 career.

“Anyway, I won’t be driving F1 until I’m 40.”

“So even if my contract expires in 2028, I don’t think I’ll be around much longer.”

“Because there are too many. Too many races.”
