The rapid development of F1 in the United States gives ideas to some, including that of racing single-seaters in the “Big Apple”, the most cosmopolitan city there is.
Thanks to the success of the series Drive to Survive on Netflix, Formula 1 has conquered the American market which was reluctant until then, to the point of seeing new Grands Prix organized in Miami then in Las Vegas in addition to the Austin round in Texas.
In the last century, the sport had never really taken root in the New World despite numerous attempts and the project of a Grand Prix in New York long seemed the key to Ecclestone, the historic promoter of the championship, who had been at two fingers from succeeding on the banks of the Hudson River in New Jersey around fifteen years ago.
A possibility now more accessible given the growing popularity of Formula 1 in the USA, as evidenced by the contacts established between Domenicali and the mayor of New York Eric Adams.
The Italian leader has pointed to the sumptuous setting of Central Park (pictured above) as the ideal venue for the event, as it already has vast avenues which could be used for the circuit, but Adams believes this would be detrimental to the impact tourism of the park and its ecological image.
He suggests another site, on Randalls and Wards Islands which already host sports fields and offer an exceptional view of the Manhattan skyscrapers, a compromise which does not seem to convince the decision-makers at Liberty Media. So, soon a Grand Prix in New York? Wait and see…
