Valtteri Bottas took the pole position of the Eifel Grand Prix. On the Nurburgring track the Finnish driver of the Mercedes set the track record in 1: 25.269 and beat the world champion Lewis Hamilton, second. Behind the two Black Arrows is the Dutchman Max Verstappen on Red Bull, then a great fourth Charles Leclerc.
The Monegasque Ferrari driver confirmed the progress highlighted in free practice in the morning, and managed to snatch an unexpected second row. Bad instead Sebastian Vettel, which will start from the eleventh square. For German it is the seventh elimination in Q2 this season.
THE QUALIFICATIONS
In Q1 Hamilton immediately ahead of everyone in 1: 26.709. Leclerc confirms the progress made in the last free sessions and puts himself in the first places, unlike Vettel, out of the ten. In the second run Verstappen is the fastest in 1’26 “319 ahead of the two Mercedes. Leclerc is sixth and Vettel ninth. Eliminated Hulkenberg (on the track to replace Stroll, who is sick), Raikkonen, Latifi, Russell and Grosejan.
Q2: Hamilton sets the track record with a time of 1’26 “183, Verstappen replies, who further tweaks the record by lapping in 1’25” 720. Rejoinder of the world champion, who closes Q2 in first place with a time of 1: 25.390. The Ferraris: Leclerc after risking elimination marks the fifth time, eliminated for the umpteenth time in Q2 Vettel. With him out also Gasly, Kvyat, Giovinazzi and Magnussen.
The duel for pole between Hamilton and Bottas is renewed in Q3 , with Verstappen acting as the third wheel. The Dutchman with a time of 1: 25.744 temporarily climbs to first position, ahead of the two Black Arrows. Leclerc is fifth.
In the second run Valtteri Bottas takes the chair and wins the pole in 1: 25.269, a new track record. Behind him, team mate Hamilton and Verstappen. Then an excellent Leclerc, who manages to snatch an unexpected fourth place thanks to a good final lap.
