F1 22 has been released – gets lower grades than its predecessors

But still good grades.

Today is released F1 22 properly (an expensive version kicked off on Tuesday). It is Codemaster’s thirteenth full – size game in the series, which in recent years has cut really high when the critics set their ratings.

Also F1 22 gets good grades: just over 80 in Metacritic average at the time of writing. At the same time, there is a marked reduction in the average, the lowest since F1 2015. Recurring criticism concerns F1 Life, a new situation that is mostly about creating a home that can be shown to others. The newcomer supercars do not go home to everyone either, and some lack F1 cars and tracks from older seasons (which disappeared already in F1 2021). There are also reports of steering wheel problems (both from Fanatec and Thrustmasters).

Codemasters was acquired by EA at the end of 2020, and this year’s game is the second under EA’s ownership. The EA skeptics’ worst fears about paywalls and microtransactions abound have not come true, but overall, critics are less satisfied with this year’s instance. It is unclear if it is EA or Codies who should be blamed for it, but hopefully it is a carrot to make a better game next year.
