Ben Hodges, who was the commander of the US forces in Europe, said that he is disappointed with how long it took to get the planes to Ukraine. According to him, one of the reasons that could affect the supply situation is the lack of training places for Ukrainian pilots – “a political decision of the administration.”
Another reason is language problems. Although Ukrainian pilots are tough, the F-16 is different and more complex than the Soviet era Mig-29 and Su-27 they are used to.
Another delaying factor is building the infrastructure to support the F-16. It has been noted that engineers on board require the same training as pilots. Some repair and maintenance work may be carried out in nearby NATO countries.
Former Chief of Staff of the German Ministry of Defense Nico Lange notes that F-16 aircraft are the main target for the Russians. Therefore, they were used with a high degree of secrecy at dispersed locations with underground or fortified shelters. But at the same time, such distribution creates a problem in logistics – more people and more spare parts are needed.
F-16 for Ukraine
The alliances, at the request of Ukraine, created an aviation coalition, within the framework of which the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive American-made F-16 fighters. Ukraine is expected to receive at least 60 aircraft, but they will be delivered gradually.
Last month, Bloomberg reported that Ukraine had acquired the F-16. According to The Times, The Netherlands donated six aircraft to Ukraine. The network also reported that F-16s were used for air defense.
