Ezeiza: this is how Coco lives his quarantine, the dog that could not enter the country for having an expired vaccine

“Coco is very well, accompanied and in good healthhe recounted, relieved, Franco Gavidiathe owner of the Coconut, the dog from Hungary that last week could not enter the country for having expired rabies vaccine. After going through the third day of quarantine at Ezeiza airportwhere he remains under observation, the news about the dog is good.

Every day, two veterinariansone indicated by the National Service for Food Health and Quality (Senasa) and one suggested by the dog’s owner, They control Coco inside the premises provided by Customs which works in the international air terminal. “It is perfect”, affirmed the spokespersons of the organism before the consultation of THE NATION. Coco, just under a year and a half old, sleeps in a wooden box within a fenced space, but has 100 meters where she can run and play to pass the time, following all animal health recommendations, they added from the Senasa.

As Gavidia and her family live in Córdoba, and they had to return to that province because today was his daughter’s birthday, the man appointed a lawyer as his legal representative in Buenos Aires. In turn, the athlete received the collaboration of former model Nora Portela, who chairs the NGO Breath of Animal Life and is who visit the puppy. The woman recorded how in these first days of quarantine Coco jumps, plays and looks in good spiritsin videos and photos that he posted on his social networks.

“This is how Coco is today on her second day of quarantine. He spent the night very well inside a bed with blankets and his ponchito, “the dog’s owners wrote in an Instagram account that is a kind of pet diary.

After ten days of quarantine, Coco will be vaccinated against rabies; Only then will he be able to return to his family. That is the procedure that was officially arranged, they indicated from Senasa, and clarified that the isolation period they account for it since leaving Colombia. “On Tuesday [por pasado mañana] I am going to be in Buenos Aires and I will stay there until I can return with him to Córdoba. Will be between June 2 and 4. They still have to confirm me, “said Gavidia.

From one day to the next, last Thursday Coco became the dog of all Argentine men and women. His case invaded social networks. The possibility that he was deported for not having the rabies vaccine when he arrived in the country, as provided by national health measures, generated endless reactions, expressions in favor of the puppy and even signatures were collected under the slogan “free Coco ”. The hashtag #LiberenACoco was the number 1 trend in Twitter.

Coco arrived last Tuesday in Argentina from Hungary with Gavidia. The young man is a handball player who lived in that country and who returned to Córdoba after the state of emergency was declared due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But the entry of the animal into the country was complicated: the rabies vaccine, required for pets, had expired eight days earlier and other documentation regarding his health status was missing. Migrations then made the decision to retain the dog.

“The sanitary requirements demanded by Senasa for the importation of dogs and cats were not met […]. The country of origin is responsible for authorizing the shipment of animals with the health documentation required by the country of destination. Here, Senasa, to protect public health, must require that dogs and cats be admitted in accordance with current health requirements, especially those related to rabies, which is a disease that affects humans and can cause death. ”, was officially communicated.

Coco was held at the Ezeiza International Airport

“In this specific case, neither the health condition nor the anti-rabies vaccination, which is also expired, were endorsed by the veterinary service of the country of origin (Hungary), with which the health status of this animal is unknown and, therefore, , its re-export would correspond”, added Senasa at the time.

Given the conditions, Coco was about to be deported. It was not clear if he would travel to Spain, where his owner has relatives who could receive Coco, or if he would go to Colombia (the last country where the flight stopped) or Hungary (where the trip originally departed from).

The story soon went viral and, as the hours passed, the claims grew so that the puppy could remain isolated in the country and then be vaccinated. More than 40,000 people signed a petition on Change.Org to ask for his release. Finally, the government decision took a turn and it was agreed, together with the owner of the dog, that the pet remain in quarantine in a property that Customs has in Ezeiza.
