Taliban militants opened fire on protesters in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan, killing at least three people on Wednesday and injuring a dozen more, eyewitnesses said.
A Taliban source has also confirmed that at least one person was killed in Jalalabad, about 150 kilometers east of Kabul.
Eyewitnesses say Islamist militants opened fire on locals who chanted anti-Taliban slogans in one of the city’s squares and tried to raise the Afghan national flag.
The video footage, taken by the local news agency Pajhwok Afghan News, shows fleeing protesters flying the Afghan flag, but shots are heard in the background.
A former police officer told Reuters that four people had been killed and 13 injured.
“There were some troublemakers who wanted to cause us problems,” a Taliban fighter at the scene told Reuters. “These people are using our relaxed policies.”
