Finding possible alternatives to Russian gas will be a “challenge” for European countries next winter, commented Exxon Mobil Vice President Peter Clark, during the international energy conference CERAWeek in Houston (USA), international media reported. According to him, the new GoldenPass liquefied natural gas terminal, through which ExxonMobil will supply gas from the US, will help replace Russian gas supplies.
The GoldenPass terminal is a joint project between Qatar Energy (70%) and ExxonMobil (30%) and construction began in 2019. It is one of the largest LNG facilities in the world, with a total capacity of over 18 million tons of liquefied natural gas per year. In April 2022, the US Department of Energy approved the expansion of the Golden Pass Joint Venture. Through this terminal, QatarEnergy will deliver gas, incl. and Germany.
In addition, the US plans to increase gas supplies to Europe through the Magnolia LNG terminal owned by Glenfarne Group LLC. It will be commissioned in 2026. The two projects will allow the US to increase LNG exports by 14.16 million cubic meters per day.
Possible big cold next winter could threaten Europe’s energy security despite now full gas storages, Exxon Mobil Vice President Peter Clarke also said.
In his words, “the Europeans will approach next winter with full gas storages, but in the gas business a lot depends on the weather outside, especially in Europe. A very cold winter will have a big (negative) effect”.
