Extremism – Bremen – police: parts of the left-wing extremist scene very violent – politics

Bremen (dpa) – According to the police, parts of the left-wing extremist scene in Bremen are very violent. “Due to past arson attacks, the potential for violence in at least part of this scene must be rated as very high,” said a police spokesman when asked by dpa. Arson attacks on police and army vehicles were carried out several times in Bremen. On New Year’s Eve, unknown persons threw incendiary devices at an office building belonging to the OHB space company. The security authorities suspect that the perpetrators come from the left-wing extremist scene.

According to police findings, around 240 people belonged to the violent left-wing scene in 2021. “We have assessed the scene’s potential for aggression and violence as consistently high for several years,” it said. In order to investigate attacks that were allegedly carried out by left-wing extremists, the state security department of the Bremen police set up the Soko Left-wing Extremism, as the authority announced in early 2022.

“Criminal offenses that can be attributed to people who belong to the left-wing extremist scene in terms of the object of the crime and the way in which they were committed, and not least because of a letter of confession, fall within the area of responsibility of the left-wing extremist unit,” said the police spokesman.

“The Soko is supported by experts from different areas of the Bremen police,” it said. “Furthermore, there is a close exchange with other state criminal investigation offices and the Federal Criminal Police Office.” The spokesman did not provide information on the size of the investigation team. “The size of the Soko is dynamic and can be increased and decreased according to the situation, depending on the work to be done.”
