Extremely hot days and nights on the Canary Islands | Abroad

A temperature of 45.6 degrees was measured in Tasarte on Gran Canaria on Monday. There was hardly any cooling at night, around midnight it was still 42 degrees. Also on the island of Tenerife it hardly cooled down and it was still 41.5 degrees at night at the airport.

A high pressure area west of the Iberian Peninsula is the cause of the extreme heat in the Canary Islands. The high nighttime temperatures are caused by a strong easterly wind from the Sahara. This also blows the already hot air towards the earth’s surface at night, making the air even more warm. On Thursday it can still be between 35 and 40 degrees on the islands, from Friday a cooler air from the north will bring relief.
