Extreme Weather Warnings in Norway: Strong Winds and Floods

It had been clear and quiet in northern Norway, while the wind and precipitation have played havoc with southern Norway.

But now there will be a lot of weather in the north too.

According to the Meteorologists – which has issued a hazard warning – there is a risk of locally very strong gusts of up to 40 meters per second from the east on Saturday.

The wind can locally reach a full to strong gale.

– It is the wind in Nordland tomorrow that is the big thing now, says on-duty meteorologist Gunnar Noer to NRK.

Mountain waves

– We are worried about gusts of wind, partly because there are somewhat special atmospheric conditions which mean that there is a high probability of gusts down at ground level.

– It is not often that we see such clear opportunities for mountain waves, as they are called.

Mountain waves occur when an air current passes a mountain or mountain range.

The mountain waves are often the origin of strong and partly unexpected downwinds along the ground, according to Store norske lexikon.

– The wind can easily hit where the wind does not normally take that wind direction. So we keep the possibility open that there could be stronger gusts than what is indicated on Yr.no, says Noer.

The warning applies from the night of Saturday to the night of Sunday.

Danger of ice on the roads

Along with the wind comes precipitation.

– There will also be precipitation, not much, but especially in the outer areas west of the E6. There may be light precipitation in the form of freezing rain or rain that freezes on the ground. It can be slippery, says the meteorologist.

Flood warning in the south

In the south, a new, orange flood warning has been issued for Agder, Telemark and Vestfold. Only on Sunday morning will the danger diminish.

– There is a risk of extensive flooding, erosion damage and flood damage in exposed locations. It can lead to closed roads and bridges and stormwater in densely built-up areas, says the warning Varsom.no.

While the danger is at yellow level for the entire Oslofjord, the stronger orange warning applies along the coast to the south and around Lindesnes in the far south.
