The most affected area is the Ionian side, with heavy rainfall still expected not only in Sicily, but also in Calabria and eastern Sardinia.
Rain and snow in the North, but it is in the South that the meteorological phenomena they are revealing themselves extremes. In the last few hours, in fact, part of the Sardinia and of Sicily were hit by violent disturbances, which added to those of the previous days. Inevitable, at that point, theweather alert red for the Ionian side of the provinces of Messina e di Cataniaorange elsewhere with the exception of part of the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina, where the alert is yellow.
And’weather alert which should also be confirmed for the next few hours and also in other regions of the Sudwith autumn starting to make itself felt with a general drop in temperatures almost everywhere, starting with the minimum temperatures. In the meantime, however, the situation in Sicilyparticularly between the provinces of Messina, Catania and Syracuse, is very delicate. Several hundred firefighters intervened in a few hours, not only to help citizens in difficulty but also to restore infrastructure, such as a gas pipe that remained submerged in the flooding of via Salvatore Quasimodo in Catania. Damage of varying degrees occurred in much of eastern Sicily, but fortunately without critical or particularly dangerous situations for citizens.
L’red alertfortunately, was taken in time and this allowed, in the capitals as well as in various municipalities of the provinces of Catania e Messinato avoid too great risks. Schools and universities closed, public competitions postponed, flights and train connections diverted or cancelled. In an area at high hydrogeological risk, and already marked by the heavy rains of the previous days, the danger appeared real and the path of prudence was chosen. Also because, with the Mediterranean still having a surface temperature 3.5°C higher than average, any disturbance could increase in intensity unpredictably.
In the next few hours, the rain will also affect other southern regions, such as Basilicata and Campania, but the heaviest rainfall is expected once again in eastern Sardinia and on the Ionian side of Calabria and Sicily.
