Extreme Mid-Winter Heat Wave Sweeps South America, Breaking Records

Despite the fact that it is now the middle of winter in South America, the scale shows extreme temperatures during the days. The next few days will probably only get warmer when a rare “winter heat wave” sweeps over the country.

In south-western parts of Brazil, it is expected that the temperature will exceed 40 degrees.

Climatologist Maximiliano Herrera says that the scorching heat represents one of the most “extreme events the world has ever seen”, writes CNBC.

– Numbers speak for themselves. And it will get worse, he writes on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Hottest in history

Extreme heat has been recorded over large parts of the globe in recent months.

The month of July may have been the hottest in history, according to CNBC.

But while countries in southern Europe are in their summer months and are thus “prepared” for hot days, it is currently winter in countries such as Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Brazil.

The temperatures measured in the southern part of the American continent, on the other hand, are far from what we know as winter temperatures.

The El Niño phenomenon ensures an extreme heat wave over large parts of the world – including South America.

– Urgent

On Tuesday this week, 30 degrees were recorded in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. Temperatures over 30 degrees have not been measured in the capital in winter since 2014.

Argentina’s national weather service wrote on Facebook this week that climate change is not a distant scenario, and that it is urgent to act.

In the next few days, it is expected that several of the South American countries will measure temperatures around 40 degrees.

In Chile, a national record was set on Tuesday when 38.7 degrees was measured in the mountain town of Vicuna.
