Extreme Hot Weather and Forest Fires Hit Tokyo and Asia in Record-Breaking Heat Wave

Tokyo

Extreme hot weather hit three continents, namely North America, Europe and Asia, which triggered forest fires and potentially record-breaking heat as the dire consequences of global warming begin to be felt.

As reported AFPMonday (17/7/2023), predictions of historic hot temperatures covering most of Asia, Europe and the United States (US).

In Japan, local authorities issued a warning heat wave to tens of millions of people in as many as 20 of a total of 57 prefectures, as near-record high temperatures blanketed large areas and heavy rains lashed other areas.

National television NHK warned that extreme heat was life threatening, with the capital and other areas recording temperatures of nearly 40 degrees Celsius. According to the meteorological agency, the record for the highest temperature in Japan — reaching 41.1 degrees Celsius when it was first recorded in Kumagaya in 2018 — can be beaten.

Several areas in Japan reported the highest temperature in more than four decades on Sunday (16/7) local time, including the city of Hirono in Fukushima prefecture with temperatures reaching 37.3 degrees Celsius.

The rest of Asia was hit by heavy rains which triggered flooding. One of them is South Korea (South Korea), with at least 39 people killed and nine others missing due to floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains for the last four days. About 12 of them were found dead in the flooded underpass.

In Japan, on Sunday (16/7) local time, a man was found dead in his car which was trapped in a flood.

Meanwhile in India, the relentless rainy season reportedly killed at least 90 people, following extreme hot weather. Major floods and landslides are common during India’s monsoon season, but experts say climate change has increased their frequency and severity.
