Extreme Heatwave Hits France: Temperatures Expected to Exceed 40°C in Multiple Cities

Temperatures will once again be very high this Tuesday, with mercury expected to exceed 40°C in many cities, particularly in the Rhône Valley and in the east of the Massif Central.

Burning temperatures. This Tuesday, four departments are placed on heatwave red vigilance as part of the heat wave which is raging in France and which “is beginning to take on an exceptional character”, according to Meteo France. These are the Rhône, the Drôme, the Ardèche and the Haute-Loire. 49 other departments remain on orange alert.

“It is in the Rhône Valley and in the east of the Massif Central that it should be the hottest, with temperatures reaching 40°C to 42°C”, wrote the meteorological agency in its bulletin.

Already hot this morning

It will already be hot this morning with 30°C expected on the Côte d’Azur in the early hours of the day, especially in Nice and Cannes, as well as 29°C in Marseille and Toulon. Perpignan and Nîmes will post 28°C this morning, as will Lyon and Privat.

“Today Tuesday at 5 a.m., we recorded 29°C in Nice and Hyères, 26°C in Marseille and Sète, 25°C in Toulouse and Montauban, 24°C in Cognac and Mâcon, 23°C in Lyon and Clermont -Ferrand”, notes Météo-France.

Maximums in Drôme and Ardèche

This afternoon, it is therefore in the Drôme and the Ardèche that we should find the highest temperatures with a mercury which should reach 40°C in several cities, with even some rises to 41°C. We will expect 40°C in Alès, 39°C in Nîmes, Valence and Avignon. Lyon will suffocate under 38°C, just like Privat.

It will also be 37°C in Albi, Carcassonne and Béziers but also Grenoble, and 36°C in Toulouse, Angoulême and Clermont-Ferrand and Gap

According to Météo-France, “the heat wave peak is expected between Tuesday and Thursday depending on the region”. It is the hottest in the summer of 2023 and is characterized by its late arrival.
