The heat wave that has ravaged countries around the Mediterranean Sea is expected to peak in parts of Italy on the 18th. Temperatures are nearing record highs in Europe and wildfires are raging in Greece.
Temperatures are expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius in parts of Sicily, Italy. Syracuse on the island recorded the highest temperature in Europe at 48.8 degrees Celsius in 2021. Temperatures in Sardinia soared to 45.7 degrees Celsius on the 17th, the highest in the region since the beginning of the year. Italy’s health ministry issued a heat wave emergency alert to 20 major cities, including Rome and Florence, urging them to take precautions against the heat.
Global warming is creating extreme weather everywhere from the United States to China, with heat waves hitting southern Europe recurring across the northern hemisphere. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said this threatens to become the “new normal” and highlights the urgency to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
