Extreme heat in southern Europe is not easing. The Spaniards are expecting a record hearth

The warmest days of this summer await the south of Spain at the weekend, and historical tables may also be rewritten. Aemet spokesman Rúben del Campo predicted that temperatures in Córdoba could reach 47 degrees on Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, meteorologists measured the highest temperature in Córdoba in 2017, when it was 46.7 degrees Celsius.

However, the heat will also be further north, with thermometers probably crossing the 40-degree limit in Madrid as well, where the highest measured temperature to date is 40.7 degrees from 2019.

Overall, it is now about five to ten degrees warmer in Spain than the long-term average. Similarly, neighboring Portugal, which has already banned people from entering forested areas due to the risk of forest fires. In Serbia, the military has installed water tanks in the streets, and the authorities are urging residents to save water and not water.

Extremely high temperatures have been prevailing in southern Italy for a long time, where they measured a record 48.8 degrees in Sicily this week. However, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said today at a briefing in Geneva that it would take several weeks or even months to verify this measured value, which is a prerequisite for it to be entered into historical tables.

Newly in Italy, the heat will hit the northern part of the country. The Ministry of Health has issued warnings about extremely high temperatures for a total of 15 cities, including Rome and Florence. The head of the Roman Catholic charity Sant’Egidio Giancarlo Penza called on television for people to pay close attention to the most vulnerable – the elderly and the homeless.

The tropics in the Czech Republic

In addition to the health risks, heat is also a challenging task for firefighters, who are already dealing with hundreds of fires. The situation in Greece is now slowly calming down and firefighters in Turkey and Sardinia can also relax, but new outbreaks are increasing every day. Today, Italian firefighters are fighting a fire near Rome, they have not won in Calabria, where flames threaten Aspromonte National Park, or in Sicily, where it burns near the volcano Etna. Fires are also proliferating in Spain, claiming 70 lives in Algeria.

Tropical temperatures, although significantly lower than in the south of Europe, were also recorded by the Czechia on Friday. The maximum was 31.6 degrees, which meteorologists measured in Neumětely in Central Bohemia and in Průhonice near Prague.

Warm weather with highs around 30 degrees should continue on weekends. According to the forecast, it could be up to 32 degrees Celsius in South Moravia on Sunday. However, Monday will bring clouds and sometimes rain to the Czech Republic.
