One of the consequences of a corona infection can be extreme hair loss. On RTL News 48-year-old Jolanda Schepers from Aarle-Rixtel in Brabant tells how she lost 80 percent of her hair after a corona infection last year. She is not alone, Rick Waalboer-Spuij of Erasmus MC in Rotterdam tells RTL:
“International studies show that about 25 percent of corona patients who have been in hospital experience hair loss.” This may be because a fever – which many corona patients have had – can cause hair loss. In addition, a possible explanation lies in the fact that hair follicles are very dependent on oxygen-rich blood. “Covid-19 may have given those hair follicles less oxygen.”

People with mild corona complaints can also suffer from hair loss. Hair loss usually starts two months after the onset of the first complaints, according to research.
American actress Alyssa Milano showed in a video on Twitter last year how much hair she lost after a corona infection. “That’s difficult, especially if you’re an actor and your identity is defined by things like long silky hair”, she said in an interview.
