In Norway’s Hamar, the local ice rink has been closed due to the heavy rainfall that has been plaguing the country for days. Due to the large amount of extra water, the Mjøsa lake, where Hamar is located, is rising and there is a threat of flooding.

For that reason, the local government plans to fill the ice rink with water to relieve the rest of the city. The track is on the water.

‘Water rose enormously’

“The water in the lake has risen enormously in recent days,” says former skater Wouter Olde Heuvel from Hamar. Today he lives in Norway and works with the Norwegian skating team.

“All the water in the area ends up in Hamar and the lake is now really at risk of flooding.”

The 36-year-old Olde Heuvel, two-time world pursuit champion, says that the situation further in the city is calm. “Every tunnel is flooded. Furthermore, a number of roads are closed and no trains are running. Further in the area they are really affected by landslides.”

Breakthrough dam

Hamar is about fifty kilometers from the dam that broke on Wednesday. For the time being this has not led to major problems further down the river. All residents in the area were evacuated.

Olde Heuvel says he is not afraid, but would like to go home. “I live near Stavanger. They don’t suffer from the storm there.”

Norway is experiencing extreme rainfall due to storm Hans. Norwegians are urged to stay at home. A railway bridge has collapsed between Oslo and Trondheim. According to the authorities, many people are trapped in their homes due to the flooding.

More flooding is expected in the country in the coming days.

There are also warnings in the middle of Sweden about the consequences of the heavy rainfall.
