Extreme Climatic Phenomena and Urgent Environmental Action: Pope Francis’s Plea for Change

“We are experiencing extreme climatic phenomena here and in many countries,” the head of the Roman Catholic Church told worshipers in St. Peter’s Square in Rome on Sunday after the traditional “Angel to God” prayer.

“And please, I again call on the knitters of the countries with concrete works to limit the amount of polluting emissions. This is an urgent challenge and it cannot be postponed, it applies to everyone. Let’s protect our common home!” Pope Francis called in an address to a crowd of about 20,000 worshippers.

Pope Francis specifically mentioned the recent floods in South Korea.

Italy and much of southern Europe have also been hit by a heat wave in recent days, and 19,000 people were evacuated on Sunday due to forest fires on the Greek island of Rhodes.

On Sunday, Pope Francis also reminded of the thousands of migrants who have been unable to leave the deserts of North Africa for weeks at a time for several years.

European and African governments must take care of these people, he said.

“The Mediterranean should no longer be a place of death and inhumanity,” the Pope said.
