British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made an extraordinary address to the nation in front of 10 Downing Street. The occasion is the growing tension in the United Kingdom against the backdrop of events in the Middle East. Democracy is being targeted by extremists who want to tear the country apart, the prime minister said.
Rishi Sunak said extremist groups, whether Islamist or far-right, “feed off each other”, that they are two sides of the same coin. They are hate groups that spread poison, the prime minister pointed out, reports BNR.
After Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and the events that followed, many are trying to capitalize on the “genuine human anger” people feel during war, Sunak noted. The prime minister said people were free to demonstrate and call for human rights, but not to call for “violent jihad”.
He added that people are free to criticize the government, but that cannot be used as an excuse for calls for the abolition of the state.
Sunak said the government would define a framework for policing the protests this week.
He informed that he met with police chiefs this week and “made it clear” that the public expectation of them is not only to police and manage these protests, but also to firmly maintain order.
“It is not enough to live side by side, we must live together, united by shared values and a shared commitment to this country,” the prime minister said, urging protesters not to allow extremists to “taint” their demonstrations.
