The Taliban took control of the Afghan capital, Kabul, on August 15 when the country’s Western-backed government collapsed, ending nearly 20 years of war amid fears of economic collapse and widespread famine.
Following the chaotic departure of foreign troops from Kabul airport in recent weeks, Western countries have severely restricted their aid payments to Afghanistan.
“China is our most important partner and represents a fundamental and tremendous opportunity for us, because China is ready to invest and rebuild our country,” Mujahid said in the interview. Al Jazeera, Friday (3/9/2021).
He said New Silk Road [Jalur Sutra Baru]— an infrastructure initiative with which China wants to increase its global influence by opening up trade routes — is held in high esteem by the Taliban.
“There are rich copper mines in the country, which, thanks to China, can be re-operated and modernized. Moreover, China is our access to markets around the world.”
Mujahid also confirmed that women would be allowed to continue their studies at universities in the future. She said women would be able to work as nurses, in the police force or as assistants in ministries, but ruled out that there would be women ministers.
