Extraordinary! Power Round 1 is over. What did they agree on? – 2024-03-09 21:14:59

The first round of negotiations between GERB-SDS and PP-DB ended without an answer to the question of how to continue governance if there is a rotation. The talks ended shortly after 10:00 p.m., BNT reports. On the part of GERB, an agreement was put on the table, which would turn the assembly into a coalition. On the part of PP-DB, a memorandum was drawn up with a mechanism for appointments in the regulators.

The outcome of the negotiations depends on whether there will be a government with Prime Minister Maria Gabriel or early parliamentary elections to be held with a vote for MEPs in June. Nikolay Denkov resigned on Tuesday. On Monday and Tuesday, President Rumen Radev will hold consultations with the parliamentary parties before handing over the government mandate to Maria Gabriel.

On behalf of GERB-SDS, Maria Gabriel, Raya Nazaryan, Temenuzka Petkova and Denitsa Sacheva took part in the negotiations. From the PP-DB, Nikolay Denkov and PP-DB leaders Kiril Petkov, Hristo Ivanov Atanas Atanasov and Asen Vasilev sat at the table.

The meeting started at 18.00. It was held in the parliament building. The negotiations will continue on Sunday to reach an agreement before consultations on a new cabinet with President Rumen Radev on Monday.

On the week of March 5, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov submitted the resignation of the cabinet and it was voted by the parliament. This caused the indignation of GERB leader Boyko Borisov, who spoke of new early parliamentary elections together with the European vote in June. In the end, PP-DB and GERB agreed to start negotiations on the rotation on Saturday night.

A little earlier on Saturday, the co-chairman of the coalition Hristo Ivanov said that he and his colleagues support the rotation, but they want guarantees for reforms to be fixed in a common document. At a conference of his “Yes, Bulgaria” party, 12 new conditions were voted, which were put before GERB.

On Friday, Denkov expressed confidence that the general management of the two formations and with the support of the DPS will continue for at least another 9 months, as provided for in the initial “gentleman’s agreement” between GERB and PP-DB.

On entering the parliament on Saturday, no one wanted to make a detailed comment. Only the co-chairman of PP-DB Atanas Atanasov expressed confidence to the journalists that the negotiations will be successful: “We will reach an agreement, be calm.”

The preliminary agreement between the first two formations envisages a rotation of the post of prime minister and the chairmanship of the parliament, which is currently held by Rosen Zhelyazkov (GERB).

Borissov’s party has already proposed signing an agreement on general governance within the framework of a full mandate. With it, GERB asked for more power, as well as for DPS to participate in filling the composition of the regulators, which are about to be replaced. Previously, the PP-DB proposed a contract for reforms, which, however, was criticized by Borisov and his colleagues.
