A Mexican federal judge delays the extradition of drug cartel leader Joaquin’s sonEl Chapo Guzman’, or Ovid Guzman in the United States. The extradition has been postponed after 29 people died in clashes during drug bust operations in Mexico.
As reported by CNN on Sunday (8/1/2023), Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard confirmed that there was a warrant for his arrest in the United States dated September 19, 2019. However, he said it was possible Guzman’s extradition would not could be performed immediately due to legal formalities. Additionally, Marcelo claimed that Guzman was pending legal proceedings in Mexico.
According to local Mexican media and the Televisa network, another federal judge ordered Guzman to remain in 60 days in pre-trial detention for extradition purposes after a hearing at the Altiplano maximum security federal prison where he is being held.
Meanwhile, Guzman’s father, “El Chapo,” had escaped from Altiplano Prison on July 11, 2015 through a mile-long tunnel. Then El Chapo was arrested and convicted in the United States four years later on 10 counts, including involvement in ongoing crimes, drug trafficking and firearms charges. He was sentenced to life plus 30 years and ordered to pay $12.6 billion in forfeiture.
29 people die after arrest of drug kingpin El Chapo’s son
Earlier, the riots occurred in Mexico after the arrest of drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman’s son, i.e. Ovidio Guzman. A total of 10 soldiers and 19 criminal suspects died as a result of clashes during the arrests.
As reported by AFP on Friday (6/1/2023), Ovidio Guzman, nicknamed “El Raton” (The Rat), was arrested in the northwestern city of Culiacan on Thursday local time. He was then flown to Mexico City in a military plane.
A dramatic shootout also occurred during the arrest process. Indeed, three planes were damaged and there was terror at the local airport.
“Ten members of the military, sadly, lost their lives in the line of duty,” Mexican Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval told reporters.
“19 offenders also died in the operation,” he continued.
Among the dead was a colonel commanding an infantry battalion. His team is attacked after the arrests are made.
Meanwhile, 35 other soldiers also allegedly suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital. Subsequently, 21 armed men were also arrested.
Not only that, gunfire and arson have also shaken Culiacan after the arrest of Ovidio Guzman. School classes in the city are also temporarily suspended.
