Extraditable man in connection with Texas migrant tragedy falls

After two years, seven of those responsible for the migrant tragedy that occurred on June 27, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas, United States, were arrested by Guatemalan authorities, led by the National Civil Police (PNC). A total of 13 operations were carried out to find those responsible, including the leader of the human trafficking network identified as “Los Orozcos”, who is wanted by the US justice system to answer for this tragedy where 53 migrants died, and for the thousands of people he illegally brought to that country.

The arrest of Rigoberto Ramón MO and other defendants took place in San Pedro Sacatepéquez, San Marcos. Meanwhile, another operation carried out in Jalapa resulted in the arrest of an alleged member of this gang. The dismantling of “Los Orozcos” sends a strong message against human trafficking seeking to illegally enter the United States, at the cost of their own lives.

The investigations carried out determined that the organization illegally housed and transported hundreds of migrants of different nationalities to the North American country. To do so, they charged each migrant thousands of quetzales, which added to years of operation, represents a million-dollar figure.

Vehicles, cash and electronic devices were seized during the operations and will be investigated. In addition, the rescue of migrants was reported in this location. The Ministry of National Defense, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the United States Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) supported this operation.
