Extinction Rebellion Protests Blocks Entrance to Storting Over Proposed Oil Fields

Activists from the organization Extinction Rebellion are protesting on Monday morning in front of all entrances to the Storting.

The activists themselves say they are blocking the entrance, but according to Aftenposten’s photographer, it looks fine to get in.

The case is updated.

According to Aftenposten’s photographer, the activists are well into action. Among other things, there are activists sitting inside glass boxes filled with an oil-like liquid.

– I know there are protesters on Løvebakken at the main entrance and the audience guard, informs the press guard at the Storting.

They are also present at the entrance at the back, says the press guard. The Storting emphasizes that it is entirely possible to get in and out of the Storting.

The police are on their way to the Storting, they write on Twitter.

At 8 o’clock Extinction Rebellion issued a press release about the demonstration. There they explain their plans in more detail. Not least the reason why they are demonstrating.

The lions on Løvebakken have been blindfolded.

Demonstrating against new proposal

The reason for the protests is a proposal the Storting is scheduled to vote on at 10. There is a proposal from the Energy and Environment Committee to approve exploration and production on three new oil fields.

– Italy is overflowing. Spain is drying out. People die. At the same time, the Storting approves new oil operations that blow up all climate targets, says activist Jonas Kittelsen in the press release.

They believe that the majority in the Storting are “deaf to the seriousness” of what the UN and the world’s climate scientists say is needed to reach the climate goals.

Climate activists campaign here.

This is the plan of the protesters

In the press release, Extinction Rebellion writes what their plan is.

How much of this they actually have and can carry out is uncertain.

  • They will blindfold the lion statues on Løvebakken.
  • They will block the main entrance with banners and activists in glass cages.
  • At the staff entrance at the back, the activists will only let politicians in if they agree to go through a “portal that shows what their party will vote for”.
The demonstrators stand outside the Storting with banners. The message is relatively clear.
