In collaboration with
estuary of the Rhine

Extinction Rebellion climate activists protested today at various branches of the ING bank. Activists are demanding that the bank stop funding the fossil fuel industry.
According to Extinction Rebellion, 11 bank branches protested. Most of the actions are now over. Only in a branch of the ING in Nijmegen are activists still present because they are chained or glued there, according to a spokesman.
According to an ING spokesperson, the demonstrations went smoothly. Extinction Rebellion contradicts this. “People have been turned away by the police or have received fines.”
Chained or oiled
Climate activists protested in front of several locations, but also entered several office buildings. Two protesters were arrested in an ING office in Amsterdam. A police spokesman said they had chained themselves to the building and refused to leave.
In an ING office in Rotterdam, the glass facade of the building was smeared with oil, it was reported estuary of the Rhine. The activists have also poured oil on themselves.
Eight activists had cordoned off a branch in Utrecht, with which they wanted to indicate that it was a “crime scene”, writes RTV Utrecht. An activist was evicted by the police after refusing to leave, according to Extinction Rebellion.
Campaign more often
Extinction Rebellion has long been campaigning against the links between ING and the fossil fuel industry. Since the conclusion of the climate agreement in Paris in 2015, ING has invested € 9 billion annually in fossil financing, says Extinction Rebellion. This would make ING the largest CO2 lender in the Netherlands.
According to ING, a transition period is needed to move from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The bank says it wants to continue supporting its customers during this transition.
