The police deployed two water cannons on Saturday during the Extinction Rebellion climate protest on the A12 in The Hague. The demonstrators block the highway to protest against the government’s climate policy.
Police called on protesters to leave the highway. When that did not happen, the water cannons were deployed for a short time. The demonstrators had brought umbrellas and remained seated. They also danced, cheered and made music.
The protest started at 12 noon. Extinction Rebellion protests, among other things, against the fossil fuel subsidies that companies receive from the government.
NU.nl reporter Emma van Bergeijk reports on the spot that the demonstrators are not impressed by the water cannon. According to her, it actually creates a “cheerful atmosphere”. The police have not yet intervened.
The action continues peacefully, with speeches and music. Several hundred people have gathered opposite The Hague Central station to support the demonstrators. They did not participate in the highway blockade, but did applaud when the protest began.
The organizers actually wanted to hold the support protest on the Malieveld, but the municipality did not allow that. He had also not given permission for the Extinction Rebellion demonstration. There is a lot of police on the ground to keep an eye on the action.
