This Saturday, you could trample the advertising posters

The press release:

This Saturday, Extinction Rebellion and Greenpeace La Réunion organized a parade in the shopping street of Saint-Denis on a 150m long pub carpet to denounce the advertising invasion which pollutes and disfigures our beautiful island.

Through this action carried out in the rue du Maréchal Leclerc with the participation of around 50 people, we remind the elected representatives of all the communes of Reunion that they have the duty to protect the population from this visual pollution which degrades the quality of life above all. the territory, and we call on them to put in place as soon as possible an ambitious local advertising regulation, the only one capable of fighting this scourge.

We deliberately chose to carry out this action on a shopping street lined with small businesses because the large format advertising targeted by this action, that which is 2 -6 – 8 or 12 m², is particularly harmful to these traders insofar as it is more than 80% of the time, the work of large companies with the financial capacity to pay for major advertising campaigns, to the detriment of small businesses. Accepting to have advertisements everywhere on the territory therefore means accepting that consumers will be attracted to commercial areas occupied by these companies, and therefore weakening the fabric of small businesses in Reunion.

We recall our demands on the subject, namely:

– a total ban on advertising devices and pre-signs sealed on the ground in and in the immediate vicinity of all residential areas on the island. Advertising, if authorized, must remain confined to areas of economic activity and does not need to pollute the landscape 10 or 20km from the companies that advertise. In the age of internet communication, we do not need to be constantly approached in the street by these disproportionate devices which measure up to 12m².

– a ban on nighttime lighting of advertisements in order to preserve the dark night and heavily impacted biodiversity.

– a ban on all digital advertising, the new scourge currently invading the island, which is all the more incomprehensible as the state is calling on the population to be energy sober.

– equal treatment between low and high urban areas because it is not normal to accept that tourist areas are better protected than residential areas. With this measure, we are targeting the RLP project of the city of Saint Paul which will create a territorial divide between the high and the low by authorizing advertising up to 10.5m² in all mid-slope districts.

– compliance with the RLPs of Saint Denis and Saint Pierre already in force which are unfortunately not applied due to lack of human resources allocated to controls in Saint Denis, and lack of political will in Saint Pierre

We know that to limit global warming, we must reduce our consumption, but advertising billboards encourage the purchase of products that are often useless and of poor quality. Reducing large format advertising devices therefore also contributes to reducing global warming.

We invite all those who wish to fight this scourge to join us!
