Extinction Rebellion Activists Protest Increase in Illuminated Advertising in Caen, France

This Monday, April 1, activists from the Extinction Rebellion group carried out an anti-ad action. Their goal: to warn of the consequences of an increase in illuminated advertising planned by the city.

This is not their first attempt. Extinction Rebellion activists in Caen are regulars at“uprooting” of advertising. A few days before last Christmas, they had already removed several advertising posters installed in bus shelters or in the city center. Instead, they had slipped a small note, printed by themselves, and stamped with the slogan: stop advertising.

A way for activists to encourage passers-by to think about overconsumption.

Advertising in public spaces artificially creates unnecessary consumption impulses and encourages overconsumption.

This Monday, April 1, the activists once again displayed their convictions. They thus denounce the project of new Local Intermunicipal Advertising Regulations (RLPi) which should be voted on this summer in Caen-la Mer.

In a press release sent to our editorial staff, they explain:

“This project provides for an increase in the number and size of illuminated advertisements in the context of the fight against global warming and energy efficiency. It will allow the installation of illuminated advertising displays in all areas, including heritage areas. will also allow the advertising display of illuminated panels up to 10.5m² and up to 6m² for digital advertisements on the main roads of the city of Caen such as we can find in commercial areas.”

To support their action, they decided to send a letter to the mayor of Caen:

“We are asking the elected representatives of the urban community of Caen to develop the RLPi project in the direction of a total ban on commercial advertising and the establishment of fixed points for associative, cultural and institutional advertising.”

Already engaged since 2020 in anti-advertising actions, the collective hopes for a total ban on advertising in all public spaces in the city of Caen.

Other cities like Nantes have already chosen to eliminate advertising space. In Grenoble, the municipal team boasted in 2015 of having banned commercial signage in the city, even if digital panels remain.
