Extinct Saharan Oryx Successfully Reintroduced to the Wild by IUCN

A species of antelope, Oryx dammah, which was thought to be extinct in the wild, has been reintroduced to the wild thanks to the efforts of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The IUCN had previously declared the species extinct, but new research published in the journal Science underscores the success of the recovery project.

The Saharan oryx, or saber-horned oryx, or saber-horned antelope, is a mammal that lives in the desert.

It has long, sharp, sword-shaped horns, hence its name. In the past, these animals lived in most of North Africa, but in the 1980s, due to prolonged droughts and poaching, their numbers were drastically reduced. In 2000, they were officially declared extinct in the wild, existing only in captivity in collections around the world.
