Poor, TOURISM – Scientists estimate that the earth is approximately 4.54 billion years old, even predating human existence. Indeed, there is more to learn about our home planet than what is taught in school. So, when photos of the bird’s unusually large claws surfaced onlinepeople couldn’t help but be surprised by it.
The giant claw was discovered by members of the New Zealand Speleological Society.
Reporting from archaeologyworld.com, archaeologists had been traversing the Mount Owen cave system in New Zealand when they made an amazing discovery. It was a claw that looked like it belonged to a dinosaur. And to their surprise, there were still muscles and skin tissue attached to it.
Later, they discovered that the mysterious claws belonged to an extinct species of flying bird called the moa. Native to New Zealand, these moas, unfortunately, became extinct around 700 to 800 years ago.
So, archaeologists later suggested that the mummified moa claw must have been more than 3,300 years old after it was discovered.
The Moa lineage likely began around 80 million years ago on the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. Derived from the Polynesian word for fowl, moa comprise three families, six genera and nine species.
There are species that vary in size, some around the size of a turkey, while others are larger than an ostrich. Of the nine species, the two largest are about 12 feet tall and weigh about 510 pounds.
