There was a protest in front of the Prefecture of Constanța where almost 150 people, citizens and medical staff demanded the opening of the Infectious Diseases Hospital.

The medical unit has not been operating since October last year when a violent fire destroyed the intensive care unit. Some of the doctors were seconded to other hospitals in the city, and those who were employed only during the alert state now risk losing their jobs.
A strong fire that broke out on October 1, last year, destroyed the infectious diseases hospital in Constanța. Seven people admitted to the intensive care unit lost their lives then. The medical unit was immediately closed, and staff were seconded to other hospitals in the city.
Cora Maxim Mitroi, primary care physician: „This hospital did not have to be closed in its entirety because unfortunately Dobrogea has no alternatives and practically all of us, the people of Constanta, were widowed by specialized medical care in the pathology of infectious diseases.”
Almost six months after the tragedy, doctors and citizens took to the streets and demanded that the hospital be reopened.
Authorities have proposed rehabilitation projects that can only be found on paper.
Florin Cocargeanu, Deputy Mayor of Constanța: „I can’t give people an answer or a promise. I can not. Without a real basis or clear information on which to rely, I cannot advance deadlines.”
Meanwhile, the doctors were seconded to several hospitals in the city and in the county. However, this is not the case for medical staff employed only during the alert period.
Assistant: „Our business has stopped. Medical staff employed during the alert period are free from office.”
Sorin Rugina, doctor: „It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. It’s frivolous here, not to mention irresponsible.”
In the absence of an infectious disease hospital, patients in Constanța are forced to be treated at other medical units in the country.
