Extensive price comparison: where in Germany mulled wine is more expensive and where is it cheaper

– With the onset of the Advent season, many Christmas markets open their doors in Germany. From north to south, of course, one drink cannot be missing: mulled wine! However, there are huge price differences.

It belongs to the Christmas market like the Christ child to gifts: mulled wine. The hot drink is served by the liter in the run-up to Christmas and is much appreciated. However, this year the prices have increased enormously and sometimes vary greatly. Showmen and stall operators face higher costs for personnel, raw materials and energy, which they have to pass on to customers.

At the “Eiszauber” Christmas market in Munich, a cup of mulled wine now costs even 10 euros. 7 euros for the drink and 3 euros for the deposit of the cup. The popular location in the Bavarian state capital was supposed to set the record for mulled wine prices. A glass with a shot of rum also costs 13 euros. In general, prices in Munich are particularly high: a cup at the Marienplatz Christmas market costs a good 5 euros.

After a two-year pandemic break, mulled wine was also 33% more expensive at Nuremberg’s famed Christkindlesmarkt this year. The coveted drink now costs 4 euros in the classic version, 4.50 euros for mulled wine with berries and 3.50 euros for children’s punch. The cup deposit remains at 3 euros.

In Düsseldorf, Bremen, Cottbus, Erfurt, Göttingen, Karlsruhe, Kiel, Freiburg, Frankfurt am Main, Münster, Dresden, Potsdam, Stuttgart and Ulm, mulled wine will also cost 4 euros this year. The deposit is then added individually.

The popular hot drink is even more expensive this year in the capital: in Berlin a cup costs 4.50 euros. It is one euro more than in previous years, when the price was 3.50 euros. Even in Cologne, 4.50 euros per cup plus deposit are due.

In these cities, mulled wine is cheaper in 2022

But there are still some large cities in Germany where prices have remained moderate. For example in Bayreuth, Dortmund, Hof, Lübeck and Rostock, where a cup costs only 3 euros plus a deposit. Special offers of mulled wine can be found even in the smallest cities of the country. The markets there are smaller, but the quiet atmosphere without large crowds can also have a special charm. At the Christmas market in Röttenbach (district of Roth), for example, mulled wine costs just 2 euros plus a deposit. It is hardly cheaper. Incidentally, the average price for a cup this year is 3.95 euros in Germany.
