Despite the strong gusts of wind and the November rain, the march brought together representatives of all ages and all walks of life from all over Scotland, the rest of Britain and other countries carrying posters with the words “Stop the big polluters!”, “COP26, we are watching you”, “Us not planet B “.

Many of the indigenous communities in North and South America are also taking part in the march, drawing attention to the fact that many of them are not even officially represented at the conference, even though indigenous peoples face the challenges of deforestation and mining most directly.

Similar demonstrations are taking place today in other European cities – London, Cardiff, Paris, Dublin, Copenhagen, Zurich, Istanbul – and elsewhere in the world – Kenya, Brazil, Australia and Canada.

In London, around a thousand people gathered for a march at the Bank of England building with posters “Less words, more work!” and “Stop shirking responsibility!”, arguing that London’s financial district acts as a “climate crisis engine room”.
