Extension of Vaccination Program for Herpes Zoster to Age Group 76-80: Basque Government Announcement

Monday, July 31, 2023, 10:14

The Department of Health of the Basque Government has announced this Monday the extension of the vaccination program against herpes zoster to people between 76 and 80 years of age (years of birth between 1943 and 1947). The Basque Country thus adds this group to the population of risk groups of any age and to people aged 65 (year of birth, 1958), to whom the vaccine has been offered since 2022 and early 2023, respectively.

It is a very painful disease caused by the chickenpox virus. Shingles, commonly known as ‘shingles’, can affect anyone who has had it in the past. This viral infection can lie dormant in the body for years and, in some cases, reactivate as shingles, which causes severe pain and band-like or patchy rashes on one side of the body.

Thus, and following the recommendations of the Basque Country Vaccine Advisory Committee, the Department of Health launched a vaccination program to protect against herpes zoster, which began with the population at risk of any age, and was extended to people over 65 years, and now it is extended to the cohort of 76 to 80 years, where the highest incidence of cases is recorded. Progressively and as announced, new groups of people between 65 and 76 years of age will be introduced, until coverage of the entire most vulnerable population is achieved.
