Extension of the Le Havre tram network

Thursday February 18, 2021, the elected officials of Le Havre Seine Métropole have approved the principles of an extension of the tram which will deploy two branches towards the southern and eastern districts of the agglomeration towards Montivilliers.

During the metropolitan council held yesterday, deliberation n ° 67 did not go unnoticed. And for good reason, his vote confirmed the main principles of the third tram line in Le Havre which will serve the southern districts of the city of Océane but also the towns in the East: Harfleur, Montivilliers and Gonfreville l’Orcher. Its commissioning is scheduled for 2027. After “ good work », The vice-president in charge of mobility Pascal Leprettre said he was satisfied to present not a final project but the main lines of the project. ” I am sure that the question will arise of how the project will be discussed, in this matter, the procedure provided for by law is specific, we cannot now define the precise characteristics of the tramway (…]. What we must do it is to define the main lines but the precise route, the locations of the stations etc… must be the subject of a dialogue. »

A project for the future
However, the foreshadowing of the future extension of the tramway to the East indicates that a new line will leave the university to reach Montivilliers, without making a detour south of the Boulevard de Leningrad (where another line will leave the station for go along the Docks and reach the Bereult valley and the Océane stadium). Objective: reduce the travel time between Montivilliers and Le Havre station to 23 minutes. Something to reassure the elected officials of Harfleur and Montivilliers who had challenged the previous project presented in 2019. This planned to supplant the local SNCF train line, the Lézarde, which serves Le Havre and Rolleville station in 15 minutes. However, the prospect of abandoning this train in favor of a tram then taking more than 35 minutes to go from Montivilliers to the Le Havre station did not pass to the elected officials concerned. The provisional route having been revised and the principle of a second branch to the south recorded, the extension project could then be voted by a very large majority. The Lizard will be called upon to disappear.

The third tram line in figures
– Two branches: an extension towards the southern districts, another towards Montivilliers.

– 50,000 more inhabitants will thus be within 600 meters on foot of a tram station.
– 38 trainsets in total, 16 for line C.
– 320 million euros is the estimated cost of this new line. The Metropolis hopes to obtain aid from other communities and the State.
– Less than 15 minutes will be necessary for the journey from Monod hospital to Le Havre station.
